Svalbard expedition ship MS Polarstar

MS Polarstar was built in 1948 for Seal hunting purpose in the ice of east Greenland. After the seal hunting periode that was finished back in the 1980´s the ship have been used in tourism and as a Sysselmann-ship in Svalbard. Now its refurbished at a cost of 20 mill NOK and looks like new. Everything in the engine room is new and the ship is very good maintained. Polarstar is built for use in the ice and Arctic Wildlife Tours will use it like that. With its high ice-class hull and engine of 2000 hp its very suitable in Svalbard.

The skipper and crew will be people from Norway that have experience from from the seal hunting period. This will ensure very experienced and skilled people that will sail the MS Polarstar through the icy waters around Svalbard.

MS Polarstar has the capacity of maximum 24 passengers, we will use it for maximum 20 passengers. Our professional guides will handle the zodiacs, making the excursion safy and adventures. That means 6-8 passengers in every zodiac. This ensures all guests have good space for photography when onboard the zodiacs.

MS Polarstar is built for extreme use, and its less comfortable than many other ships. The cabins are small and original. All of them are built as double cabins. Arctic Wildlife Tours will offer one suite mid-ship, 4 double cabins and 6 single cabins on most of our trips. This ensure flexibility and good space even if the cabins are smaller. What MS Polarstar loose in comfort it will gain back on its extreme capacity in the ice and its average speed of 12-13 knots. The ship will be used as the extreme ship it is to give the passengers the best possible experiences in the Arctic environment.

Our plan is to start the Arctic summer season 2019 with MV Polarstar doing things never been done before. With her ice-strengthen hull strong 2000 HP engine she will have the possibility to take us to places other ships can’t.

During our small-ship expeditions, you can look forward to an ongoing series of destination lectures, photo presentations, daily recaps, and onshore interactive walks. On land journeys, one or two field experts will share their intimate knowledge of the region, its wildlife and its cultures, while ensuring that you have a smooth and well-rounded expedition experience.

The Arctic region is a unique area among Earth’s ecosystems. For example, the cultures in the region and the Arctic indigenous peoples have adapted to its cold and extreme conditions. In recent years, Arctic sea ice decline has been caused by global warming. Life in the Arctic includes organisms living in the ice,  zooplankton and phytoplankton, fish and marine mammals, birds, land animals, plants and human societies. Arctic land is bordered by the subarctic. edition experience.
